PROTOTYPE Bible Verse Recognition app

Good morning everyone! As of September 1, 2026, you can now click here to use the version 1.3 prototype of the app, now with four separate modes — Display Mode, Study Mode, Quiz Mode, and Game Mode.

Verse Recognition App

This prototype helps you recognize Bible verses: see a passage and know where it is, or see a reference and remember the words. It uses the public-domain King James Version (about 31,102 verses). The cards are a large set of single-verse and multi-verse passages, including many well-known ones.

Chapter titles, short and longer chapter summaries, parallel-chapter notes, and “quoted from / later quoted by” notes come from data prepared for the Daily Chapter Bible app, which is not released yet. When that app is on this site, you will be able to review and customize that chapter data. Until then, the Verse Recognition app uses the current draft of those notes.

There are four modes:

  • Display Mode — shows passages. You can advance by hand or on a timer. A simple view shows only the quote and reference. A detailed view adds chapter context and nearby verses.
  • Study Mode — the same detailed card as Display, always advancing by hand. Good when you want to linger and read.
  • Quiz Mode — multiple choice. See a quote and pick the reference, or see a reference and pick the quote.
  • Game Mode — Quiz with a walk. Correct and incorrect answers turn you on or off a path toward a distant gate.

Each mode can be started with simple defaults, or you can change what is included (famous passages only, certain books, Daily Chapter chapters, passage length, and more).

Basic tutorial

You can ignore most of the filters at first. Use the Home page A− / A+ buttons if the type is too small or too large on your phone, tablet, or computer.

Display Mode, as simply as possible

  1. From Home, choose Display Mode.
  2. Leave difficulty on “any,” source on “whole Bible,” and length on “any.”
  3. Choose Manual only or a timer (10 seconds, 30 seconds, and so on). For a quiet desk or phone face-up, try 30 seconds and Simple display.
  4. Tap Start Display.
  5. You will see a quote with the reference under it. Use Previous / Next, or let the timer change slides. Pause holds the current verse. End Session returns to Display setup.

Study Mode, as simply as possible

  1. From Home, choose Study Mode.
  2. Leave the filters on the defaults (whole Bible, any difficulty, any length).
  3. Tap Start Study.
  4. Read the quote and reference, then the chapter context, the longer chapter summary, parallels/quotes, and the verses around the passage (the current verses are in blue).
  5. Use Next and Previous. There is no timer. End Session returns to Study setup.

The titles and summaries on this screen are the Daily Chapter Bible draft notes mentioned above.

Quiz Mode, as simply as possible

  1. From Home, choose Quiz Mode.
  2. Leave Simple quizzing selected.
  3. Choose how long to play (for example 10 questions, or continue until stopped).
  4. Choose direction: Quote → Reference (read the verse, pick where it is) or Reference → Quote (see the reference, pick the wording).
  5. Tap Start Quiz and tap one of the answers. You can end the session at any time.

Game Mode: The Straight and Narrow Way

Game Mode is a lighthearted way to do the same serious work as Quiz Mode. After you choose your filters, an intro screen explains the idea, then you start walking.

The name is a purposely misspelled variation of the strait and narrow way spoken of by Jesus in Matthew 7:13–14. Most people think of a “straight” path, and the game uses that picture: you look down a road toward a distant gate. The King James Version actually says “strait,” meaning a tight and narrow way. The game keeps the familiar spelling in the title while the walk itself is the picture.

  1. From Home, choose Game Mode.
  2. Leave Simple quizzing selected unless you want advanced filters.
  3. Choose how many wrong answers appear with the right one: 1, 2, or 3 distractors.
  4. Choose the length of the way: 20, 40, or 80 steps to the gate.
  5. Choose heading changes: fixed 20°, or slightly random based on the number of distractors. Optionally check the box for a quicker turn back toward the path when you are off it and get the next answer right.
  6. Choose quiz direction, then tap Start the Walk.
  7. Read the short intro, then tap Start walking toward the kingdom.
  8. Each correct answer turns you toward the path or keeps you on it. Each incorrect answer turns you farther into the field. You always take one full step toward the gate. A trail of footprints shows where you have been.
  9. If you leave the path, later correct answers can turn you back toward it. If you are already on the path and answer correctly, you stay on it and keep facing the gate.
  10. When you finish the steps, tap Well done… if you reached the gate on the path, or Sorry… if you arrived off the path. That opens the conclusion screen.

Advanced tutorial (especially Quiz filters)

On the Quiz or Game setup page, choose Select from advanced filters. Display and Study keep a shorter set of the same “what to include” filters; they do not use distractors or scoring.

Passage difficulty

Keep “any difficulty,” or limit the pool to the most widely known passages (top 200, 300, 400, or 600 by fame rank). This is combined with your book/section choice. If too few passages match, widen the scope or pick a larger famous set.

Where passages come from

  • Whole Bible — the full card set.
  • Major section(s) — e.g. Pentateuch, Gospels.
  • Individual book(s) — one or more books.
  • Certain sub-sections — Paul’s Epistles (Hebrews included here for practice), the David narrative, or 8th-century BC chapters.
  • Recent chapters from Dean’s Daily Chapter Bible — today only, or the last 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, or 4 weeks. Those chapter lists follow the Daily Chapter calendar that will ship with the forthcoming Daily Chapter Bible app.

Quiz-only choices

  • Where distractors come from — the wrong answers can come from the whole Bible, the same section, the same book, nearby chapters, or you can choose per question.
  • Text version — plain wording, or blanked wording for extra challenge.
  • Scoring — none (practice), simple right/wrong, or complicated scoring that can add a speed bonus. If you turn on speed tiers you will see a count-up timer in the middle of the header (green / yellow / red). If you also set a timed session, a separate countdown stays in the upper right.

Game-only choices

  • Number of distractors — 1, 2, or 3 wrong answers beside the right one.
  • Length of the way — 20, 40, or 80 steps to the gate. That is also the zoom of the map: the start stays on the left and the gate stays on the right.
  • Heading change options — fixed 20°, or slightly random by distractor count. Each answer gets its own roll.
  • Quicker turn back — optional. Only used on a correct answer while you are already off the path; that turn is doubled.

Shared with Display and Study

  • Passage length — any cards, single-verse only, or multi-verse only.
  • Quiz session length can be a fixed number of questions, 5 / 10 / 20 minutes, a custom time, or continue until you stop.
  • Display can use a preset timer, a custom interval, or manual advance, and simple vs detailed layout.

Start with simple quizzing and whole-Bible Display. Add one filter at a time (for example “Gospels” plus “300 generally easier passages”) so you can feel how the pool changes. When the Daily Chapter Bible app is released, you will be able to adjust the chapter titles, summaries, and parallel/quote notes that Study and detailed Display already show.

This is a prototype. The translation on screen is the King James Version, which is in the public domain in the United States.
